The debut of Australian golfer Ryan Peake at The Open was marked by mixed emotions as he finished with a 6-over 77. Despite the challenging score, Peake’s experience at Royal Portrush included memorable moments and interactions, particularly playing alongside Phil Mickelson.
Peake, who has attracted media attention due to his redemption story from being a jailed bikie to winning the New Zealand Open, earned an Asian Tour card and is set to become a DP World Tour player thanks to his performance on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit.
His pairing with Mickelson added excitement to his week. Reflecting on his round in tough conditions, Peake said, “It was pretty good. I just asked for his golf ball and got him to sign a golf glove for me after.” He humorously described his performance as “like Father Christmas out there; I was just handing out presents to the golf course.”
Despite frustrations during the round, Peake managed a highlight on the par-3 16th hole, known as ‘Calamity Corner,’ where he nearly achieved a perfect shot with a 5-iron. “It was just perfect number, perfect club,” he commented.
Peake expressed no immediate plans for reflection between rounds but looked forward to sharing souvenirs with his father Mel, a fan of Mickelson. Describing their interaction, Peake joked about Mickelson introducing himself: “I don’t think he needs to introduce himself; I was well aware of who he was.”
The event continues with all four rounds broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo.
