Minjee Lee is aiming to secure her place among the elite in women’s golf by seeking a victory at this week’s AIG Women’s Open, which would grant her a career grand slam. Since the Amundi Evian Championship was elevated to major status in 2013, there have been five majors each year, and only one player—Karrie Webb—has completed the ‘Super Slam’ by winning all five. Achieving four out of five bestows Career Grand Slam status, something only seven women have accomplished so far.
Lee has already won three different majors: the 2021 Amundi Evian Championship, the 2022 US Women’s Open, and this year’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Texas. She now has an opportunity to become the eighth woman to win four different majors. The 29-year-old has posted consecutive top-five finishes from 2020 to 2022 and continues her strong form into this season.
“All the majors are a great motivator for me,” said Lee, who was third at the Evian Championship and tied for 21st at last week’s Women’s Scottish Open.
“Yes, I definitely want to win it at some stage and be able to get the career grand slam. That would be absolutely amazing.
“Lydia (Ko) is in the Hall of Fame and, now that I look back at it, what I can say is that’s quite a big motivation for me, to try and get those over the line.”
Lee is part of a group of nine Australians competing in this final major of 2025—a significant increase compared with when she first joined the LPGA Tour alongside veterans like Karrie Webb, Sarah Jane Smith, and Katherine Kirk. Newer players such as Grace Kim, Stephanie Kyriacou, Karis Davidson, Gabriela Ruffels, Hira Naveed, and Cassie Porter are also competing at Royal Porthcawl.
Reflecting on her role within this growing Australian contingent on tour, Lee commented:
“Obviously I’m a little older than the girls coming through now,” she added
“I don’t know how to say it. I’m not a veteran, but more of an older sister to these guys so it just feels a little bit different.
“I’ve seen them since their amateur days and junior days and now they’re on circuit with me so it kind of feels like more of a full circle moment.
“It’s really great to see them all doing pretty well and settling down on the Tour now.”
Grace Kim will be first among Australians teeing off Thursday at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales. This event marks not only an important milestone for Lee but also serves as the last chance for several Australian men—including Adam Scott—to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs via results at events such as the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Scott needs at least a two-way tie for third or better to move into playoff contention; Karl Vilips must improve his current ranking while Cam Davis aims to maintain his position inside the top 70.
Other Australians are set to compete across various tours worldwide this week—including Brad Kennedy on Japan Golf Tour; Rhein Gibson on Korn Ferry Tour; Hayden Hopewell on HotelPlanner Tour; Stephanie Bunque on LET Access Series; Su Oh on Epson Tour; Scott Hend on Legends Tour; Grant Booth on PGA TOUR Americas—and several others participating internationally.
Past champions from Australia include Corinne Dibnah (1988), Karen Lunn (1993), Karrie Webb (1995, 1997, 2002) at AIG Women’s Open; Steve Elkington (1990) at Wyndham Championship; Jeff Woodland (1992) and Karl Vilips (2024) at Utah Championship; Julia Boland (2012) and Gabriela Ruffels (2023) at Four Winds Invitational.
Broadcast coverage for these tournaments will be available live throughout each event window across Fox Sports channels and Kayo Sports platforms.
