Brisbane golfer Michael Wright is on the verge of a significant achievement at the Kaulig Companies Championship in Ohio, following his second consecutive 4-under 66. Wright, who is competing with limited category status in his second season on the PGA TOUR Champions, managed to score 4-under during Saturday’s third round at Firestone Country Club.
Despite experiencing some nerves leading to an even-par back nine, the 51-year-old remains optimistic as he prepares for the final round alongside son Noah, who serves as his caddie. Wright will enter the last day two strokes behind Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez and New Zealand’s Steven Alker but maintains confidence in his ability to compete at this level.
“The more times I can get in the top 10, top five, the more comfortable I’ll be,” said Wright. He expressed a slight disappointment from last year but aims to leverage that experience moving forward.
Wright recently won the Webex Players Series Victoria on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and has achieved five top-12 finishes out of seven starts this year. He credits Noah for helping him stay focused. “He’s a good calming influence,” Wright noted about having family support during tournaments.
Other Australian golfers are also in contention for a win. Victorian Richard Green is one stroke behind Wright and three off the lead in fifth place, while Mark Hensby from New South Wales is tied for ninth and seven strokes back.
Round three Australasian scores showed Steven Alker (NZ) leading with -8, followed by Michael Wright at -6 and Richard Green at -5. The fourth round tee times are set with Cameron Percy starting at 1:15 am AEST and others following closely after.
Wright remains determined to capitalize on his current position as he competes against some of golf’s seasoned professionals in pursuit of victory.
