Mark Hensby expressed satisfaction with his performance at the US Senior Open in Colorado, despite not achieving his birthday wish of winning the tournament. The Australian golfer was a co-leader for the first three days at The Broadmoor and played alongside major champions Padraig Harrington and Stewart Cink in the final group.
Hensby’s early struggles, dropping shots on the first and fifth holes, were costly as Harrington took advantage by establishing a five-stroke lead with birdies on the second, third, and fifth holes. Harrington went on to win his second US Senior Open title in three years by one stroke over Cink.
Celebrating his 54th birthday, Hensby finished tied for fourth place with a score of 73 in the final round. This marked his second top-five finish in this event since 2022. Reflecting on playing with experienced golfers like Harrington and Cink, Hensby said: “When you play with a Hall of Famer and Stewart Cink, obviously a very accomplished player, it’s always fun. You always learn something from them.”
Despite feeling comfortable overall during the week, Hensby acknowledged that he didn’t start as well as needed to contend seriously for the title. “I’m going to be honest,” he admitted. “Today I just got off to a bad start. We just hit a few clubs that probably weren’t the right clubs and hit it in some bad spots where it’s hard to two-putt.”
Meanwhile, Victorian Cameron Percy closed with an impressive 4-under 66 to secure a spot inside the top 10 at ninth place. Scott Hend (70) and Greg Chalmers (69) also performed well enough to place four Australians within the top 20.
In other golf news, Min Woo Lee’s initial course record of 9-under 63 helped him achieve his best PGA TOUR result since March by tying for 13th at the Rocket Classic in Detroit. Cameron Smith also earned a share of 13th place at LIV Golf Dallas.
Cassie Porter teamed up with Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh to finish tied sixth at the Dow Championship on her rookie season on the LPGA Tour.
