The 4-hybrid shots by Grace Kim during the Amundi Evian Championship have been highlighted as remarkable achievements in Australian golf history. Her coach, Khan Pullen, a PGA Professional, shares insights on the benefits of hybrid clubs for golfers.
Pullen advises that amateur golfers should consider having at least one hybrid club in their bags. He notes that even professional male golfers, who generally have higher clubhead speeds than female players, are increasingly using hybrids and fairway woods due to their ease of use and forgiveness.
Hybrids are easier to hit because they have a wider sole and a lower center of gravity. This design helps improve contact with the grass and elevates the ball more easily compared to long irons. Hybrids are also advantageous when playing from rough or fairway bunkers.
Pullen suggests adopting an iron-like mentality and swing technique when using hybrids, emphasizing a slightly downward angle of attack for effective use. He encourages golfers to consult with a PGA Professional for proper fitting regarding carry distance, height, and spin rate.
Grace Kim’s success at Evian underscores the effectiveness of hybrids. Khan Pullen has been recognized as the High Performance Manager at Golf NSW since 1993 and was named PGA NSW/ACT Coach of the Year – High Performance in 2023.
