Karl Vilips, a young Australian golfer who turned professional less than a year ago, has caught the attention of Geoff Ogilvy, the captain of the 2026 Presidents Cup team. Vilips is set to participate in his first major championship as a professional at the US PGA Championship, playing alongside Thorbjorn Olesen and Laurie Canter.

Vilips’ impressive performance, including a victory at the Puerto Rico Open in just his fourth PGA TOUR start, has made him a noteworthy contender. His success has been acknowledged by Ogilvy, who was recently appointed captain of the International team for the 2026 matches in Chicago. Ogilvy remarked on Vilips’ early promise and potential to challenge top American players.

Ogilvy stated, “I’m not massive on social media, but I was always pretty aware that he was pretty good.” He noted Vilips’ impressive college career at Stanford and rapid transition to professional golf. “The future is bright for him,” Ogilvy added.

Vilips’ journey began when he first caught the eye of Jason Day’s coach Colin Swatton at the 2014 US Open. After facing challenges due to an injury and surgery in 2020, Golf Australia’s High Performance Director Brad James facilitated Swatton’s involvement in coaching Vilips. Swatton recalled meeting Vilips during this low point and helping him rebuild confidence.

Swatton expressed admiration for Vilips’ mental strength and vision: “I just thought to myself, here’s a kid that saw himself somewhere months before it happened.” He believes that with proper guidance, Vilips could become one of Australia’s great golfers.
