Australian golfer Elvis Smylie has confirmed his participation in the upcoming BMW Australian PGA Championship, aiming to defend his title. The event will take place at Royal Queensland Golf Club from November 27-30 and is co-sanctioned by the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and DP World Tour.
Smylie, a 23-year-old from the Gold Coast, gained significant attention last season when he defeated three-time champion Cameron Smith to win the Joe Kirkwood Cup. This victory earned him full-time membership on the DP World Tour and led to his winning of the 2024/25 Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit title.
Reflecting on his past success, Smylie stated, “Winning the Joe Kirkwood Cup for the first time was a huge honour and definitely the highlight of my career so far.” He expressed excitement about returning to Royal Queensland Golf Club: “Although there’s still a lot of this year to play out, I can’t wait to get back to RQ and try to do it all again.”
Gavin Kirkman, CEO of PGA of Australia, praised Smylie’s performance last year against Cameron Smith. He noted Smylie’s progress since then, including making the cut at his first US PGA Championship. “We look forward to seeing Elvis back at Royal Queensland where I’m sure he will be determined to get his name on the Kirkwood Cup for the second time,” said Kirkman.
Wolfgang Buechel, CEO of BMW Group Australia—the championship’s title partner—commented on their association with Smylie: “BMW has a long and proud association with Elvis, and it has been delightful for us to witness his remarkable rise in world golf.”
Tim Mander, Minister for Sport and Racing as well as Minister for Olympic and Paralympic Games, highlighted Smylie’s impact on local golf: “Elvis Smylie’s win last year was a standout moment for Queensland and Australian golf.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner expressed enthusiasm about hosting the event again: “Brisbane is excited to host this world-class event for the fifth straight year in 2025.” The championship is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland along with Brisbane City Council via Brisbane Economic Development Agency.
The tournament continues its tradition at Royal Queensland Golf Club while contributing significantly to local tourism by attracting visitors who support local businesses during their stay.
