Cam Davis made a strong start at the PGA Championship, finishing two strokes behind leader Jhonattan Vegas after the first round at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. Despite recent struggles, including five consecutive missed cuts, Davis shot a 5-under 66.
Davis expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating: “I haven’t been having the best results on course over the last few months and been working really hard to turn that around.” He added, “To see the first real sign that it’s turning around happen in the first round of a major, it’s very encouraging.”
The tournament saw Kiwi Ryan Fox finish one stroke behind Davis with a score of 67. Adam Scott ended tied for 20th after late bogeys affected his score. Elvis Smylie completed his first PGA Championship round with a 1-under 71.
Davis attributed part of his success to putting skills, saying: “Rolled a lot of putts that went in and kept the momentum going.” He noted the importance of maintaining focus throughout all four rounds.
Scott had notable moments as well, such as rolling in a birdie from 42 feet on the sixth hole. However, challenges on later holes affected his standing.
Jason Day scored a 2-over 73 while Min Woo Lee’s round included an eagle but was marred by several bogeys and double bogey for a total of 74. Karl Vilips and Cameron Smith both finished with scores of 78.
The tournament continues as players aim to improve their standings over subsequent rounds.
