The Belmont Golf and Bowls Club, located south of Newcastle, has witnessed a resurgence in its junior golf program. Previously known for hosting the Lake Macquarie Amateur until 2016, the club had seen a decline in young participants. However, PGA Professional Andrew Walkley has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the program over the past five years.

Walkley, who joined Lake Macquarie Golf Schools at Belmont, has expanded the junior base from 25 to approximately 150 participants. He focused on bridging the gap between practice and actual gameplay for young golfers. “There’s a big disconnect between being on the range and chipping and putting to actually playing golf,” said Walkley during a recent PGA ACE Webinar.

To address this issue, Walkley initiated a junior development program that encouraged children attending Sunday clinics to also participate in Tuesday afternoon sessions. These sessions alternate between skill development and time on the course itself. If Walkley notices that kids prefer playing over practicing, he accommodates by giving them more game time.

“They’re really enjoying that experience of getting out on the golf course and actually playing the game,” Walkley stated. He emphasized the importance of early exposure to actual play rather than just practice routines.

Effective communication with club executives and members was crucial for providing an environment conducive to junior golf development. By scheduling activities during quieter periods like Tuesday afternoons, Walkley ensured minimal disruption for regular members while fostering support for his initiative.

“We try to make sure that if any of the members come out for nine holes, we guide them to go the other way,” explained Walkley. The club’s cooperation has been instrumental in supporting this growth in junior participation.

Belmont’s efforts reflect broader trends in sports psychology and coaching development where actual gameplay is valued as much as traditional practice methods.
